Founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Charity, St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney is today one of Australia’s most iconic and highly regarded Hospitals, functioning as a principal referral and tertiary, public teaching hospital. All of our staff at St Vincent’s Hospital strive to deliver the highest quality of patient care.

World-Class Research at St Vincent’s Health Precinct Sydney

The Precinct is home to three medical research institutes: Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research. For more than 50 years, they have pioneered innovations and research-driven healthcare that has changed how modern medicine is delivered in Australia.

At the Hospital, we provide significant training and research activities housing several specialty units that are internationally recognised as centres of excellence. These include heart and lung transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, cardiology, cancer care, AIDS/HIV, respiratory medicine, mental health and drug and alcohol services.

The Hospital and research institutes are all affiliated with UNSW Medicine, which has a distinguished history of medical student education, service and research. Many UNSW undergraduate and postgraduate students undertake research projects at our institutes, providing them with opportunities to thrive in an atmosphere of dedication and excellence.

International Partnerships

In July 2023, St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and the American Australian Association announced the establishment of a new Clinical Exchange program. Doctors, nurses and researchers from the US and Australia will have the opportunity to participate in immersive clinical experiences, working alongside renowned experts in their fields. The program will facilitate the cross-pollination of ideas, and advance training and research breakthroughs with some of the leading hospitals in the United States, and in return US scholars will work alongside St Vincent’s world-leading teams. The first exchange recipients will travel in 2024.

This collaboration is funded by the philanthropic supporters of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation.

Going Above and Beyond

St Vincent’s Curran Foundation is the fundraising organisation for St Vincent’s Hospitals and Facilities in NSW. We help to bridge the gap where Government funding does not cover the costs of new equipment purchases, patient care services, capital works and essential medical research.

Your support ensures that St Vincent’s Hospitals and our clinical research teams are better placed to recruit and develop the best nurses, doctors and allied health workers in an increasingly competitive market. It ensures our frontline staff have the best resources, equipment, research and education opportunities helping them, in turn to provide the best possible patient care.
